We are very pleased with the iPAQ 5915. This new PDA offers a built-in GPS which leaves two open Bluetooth ports, which can be used concurrently with XM WX and XRX Traffic. It also includes TomTomĀ® Navigator software and has a separate suction cup mount for the car.
New to the line-up is the Samsung Q1 Ultra SSD. This device offers amazing sunlight readabliliy and a 32GB solid state drive.
If space in your cockpit allows for a tablet, consider the premium-size view of these displays along with their speed and versatility. Motion tablets ship with a special outdoor transflective screen called View Anywhere. Motion tablets are powered by an Intel 1.2 GHz Pentium and run Windows XP. They are available with 8.4-inch and 12.1-inch displays.
Mission :
If you plan to use Pocket Plates, you will need, at the very least, an additional 512 MB of storage; either an SD or a Compact Flash card.
Large format screens like the Motion tablets permit viewing all of an approach plate.
Bluetooth:
Bluetooth is wireless communication between devices that cuts down on the overall number of wires to the PDA. To use this option you’ll need a Bluetooth-equipped PDA plus a Bluetooth peripheral such as a GPS, XM weather receiver, or XRX. The Sentinel Blue or Garmin GPS10 can be located anywhere in the cockpit. Although Bluetooth can be installed as an add-on to many PDAs, it is more practical and less expensive to start with a Bluetooth-enabled device. The Dell Axim X51v, iPAQ 5915, iPAQ 4705 and iPAQ 2490 offer Bluetooth.
Recommendations:
In general, for PDAs we recommend the iPAQ 5915. Because of it's integrated GPS, street navigation and Bluetooth expandability. The discontinued Dell Axim X51V, HP iPAQ 4705 and HP 2490 are fine systems and work well if you can find one. We have found iPAQs and Axims to be the most reliable and sturdiest of the popular PDAs. Their screen quality is excellent and they are fully upgradeable to weather or Pocket Plates.
Altitude considerations:
Manufacturers caution against using traditional hard disk drives at pressure altitudes above 10,000 ft. This restriction does not apply to solid-state devices like PDAs or the Anywhere SST which is based on a standard Motion LS800.
