Anywhere SST vs Garmin 696

Comparison between the Garmin 696 and the Anywhere Map Duo
The Anywhere Map Duo™ is a Solid State Tablet optimized for the pilot. The 32GB solid state storage is unaffected by shock, temperature, or altitude, unlike delicate spinning hard disk drives found on some systems. The bright 7.0" touch screen is the same size but has nearly twice the resolution of the Garmin 696, and the 1.33 Ghz processor provides ample power to provide very fast map updates.

MaxNAVAnywhere Map PRO software on the Duo offers sharp map detail and an array of exclusive features, including our patented Cones of Safety®, 100LL.com fuel prices, the “best in the business” UltraTAWS™ 90 meter terrain mapping, and the newly released MaxNAV™ electronic sectional charts. NO other Aviation mapping system offers any two of these features. The 696 cannot match any of these features.

Both the 696 and the Duo have taxi diagrams, obstacles, airways, Airport Directory, simulated instruments, optional XM weather, and extensive aeronautical databases.

Pocket Plates® PRO is the best plate viewing utility in the industry. The higher resolution of the Duo screen delivers much more plate detail at any zoom level, and the ease of use of the Duo’s simple touch screen completely eclipses the Garmin.

Save on fuel

Both units come preloaded with all the plates, but the plates on the G696 are just images, they do not offer any provision to overlay the aircraft position on the plate image, nor to they offer any additional information to improve the pilot’s situational awareness.

When an approach plate is called up on the screen, the Garmin 696 becomes a very expensive electronic book viewer, ALL GPS functionality is lost while the plate is up on the screen. The Duo not only shows the aircraft position on the plate, but it also shows UltraTAWS Terrain over the plate, and even shows NEXRAD weather data over the plate. The Pilot can “mark up” a plate by writing notes on the plate image using the touch screen. If you need to remember a critical altitude, just circle it and the annotation will be there the next time the plate is called up.

SST vs 696Both Pocket Plates PRO and Anywhere Map PRO feature our third generation touch screen technology. All common flight operations are easily accomplished without a stylus, and data entry is quick and easy on our exclusive “big key” on screen keyboard that automatically pops up whenever data entry is required. Looking up an airport is as simple as tapping the “Look up” touch screen button and tapping “O-S-H” on the keyboard that appears.

While the twisty knob joystick on the 696 is a vast improvement over previous Garmin products, our rough air friendly keyboard is MUCH simpler to use, even in bumpy air. The Duo also has a full mechanical keyboard, as well as a zoom in/out mechanical control on the body of the tablet. Many operations can be accomplished using these buttons, or on the touch screen.

The Duo offers the versatility and utility of Windows®, and supports WiFi and Bluetooth for networking and connectivity. You can even browse the Internet, check email, read PDF documents, and run all sorts of other software on the Duo. The battery life is exceptional at 4 to 5.5 hours. With all this power, the Duo weighs in at about 1.46 lbs, or about half of the weight of a Garmin 696. For a completely wireless map system use our plug in USB GPS module, or our tiny Bluetooth GPS module.

Conclusion:
When considering only the purchase price, the Garmin 696 costs over $800 more. The long term cost of the 696 are what make the Garmin much more expensive in the long run. The annual cost of ownership is a whopping $1300.

Feature for feature the 696 does substantially less than the Anywhere Map Duo.
