Once a sign of prestige in general aviation, the utility of onboard radar has been surpassed by NEXRAD, national aviation weather radar. National NEXRAD is snapshot of the entire US weather situation using a ground-based Doppler radar network. It shows seven levels of precipitation across the entire country, revealing nested storms and widespread, fast-changing convective activity.

On-board radars use small to medium sized radar dishes and show only a narrow wedge directly in front of the aircraft extending outward for 75-100 miles at best, 20- 30 miles at worst. NEXRAD is national and shows the true Big Picture.

The 141 Doppler radars collaborate to create a static image of the US weather situation every 5 minutes – the NEXRAD image. On-board and individual ground-based radars can attenuate (return false results) if precipitation becomes too intense for the single dish, which obscures the weather beyond the radar’s range. This is more pronounced with the smaller radar dishes found in general aviation aircraft.

Anywhere Wx delivers NEXRAD and lightning information that covers the entire continental US. Unlike expensive radar systems and lightning detectors, Anywhere Wx shows the precise range and full extent of developing storms. Lightning reporting is even faster than NEXRAD, delivering patterns depicting the recency of the strikes. the lightning bolts depicted cover a 5-minute time period so the pilot can see a good view of storm intensity.

METARs and TAFs make enroute flight management a proactive and lower stress activity than relying upon Flight Watch or hours-old forecasts. Why fly a low IFR approach for a fuel stop when you can deviate 30 miles south and land in marginal VFR conditions?
